printing for show and for structure

  • for show models density infill is 12% but structural materials is 30% and 50% can make bottom to be more dense as bottom might need to support the nicer less dense model in the top

Ways to speed up printing time

  • orientation

ree
ree

lying down print time is 14 minutes standing up is 20minutes

an object lying down will print faster than an object standing up because the machine will have to spend time changing the height but if the object is lying down the machine wont have to spend alot of time changing its height

  • printer type of printer affects the print speed

ree
ree

prusa on the left takes 6minutes and ultimaker on the right takes 12minutes to print

ree

we realised that prusa used a thicker material which made print time faster than ultimaker however this sacrifices precision and quality of model

  • adaptive layers (plugin)

ree

adaptive layer can help you decide which layers should be thicker and which layers should be thinner speeding up print time

  • lightning infill

ree

lightning support is an organic shape that uses less materials and speeds up print time however the printed object will be weaker

Task

  • we had to cut the 3d printing time of the cube from 1hr to as little as possible (3d printing Olympics )

ree

we manage to cut the time of printing cube from 1hr plus to 3mins the settings we changes are as of follows

  • removed the adhesion

  • remove supports

  • added lightning infill 0.5% infill density

  • changed layer height 15

  • horizontal expansion set to 1.5

Results

ree

the machine was unable to bite the bed because there is no adhesion and it started printing in the air
